Our students create a lot of video and audio throughout the year. One of the hardest things for them to do is to create a storyboard that really gets to the heart of the story. Much like Matthew Needleman shows in his k-12 Online Conference “Film School for Video Podcasters,” I have always used a storyboard worksheet. Over the years I have tried a variety of layouts and even created my own. After viewing Matthews presentation, I realize the layout was not the problem, but how student see the shot they are going to make. Creating a scene in your head first, drawing it, and then creating the frame around it see is so logical! I will definitely be putting this into action this year. I can not wait to see the results.
Needleman’s post also led me to his Blog, where a great wealth of resources can be found. Tips, tools, and links to even more resources and samples of student works have already made me rethink how I might approach movie making with student and how to better integrate the use of movie and video into the curriculum. In addition, Needleman’s blog led me to another conference he had posted on the K12 Online website. Steal This Preso (K12Online09) Now Live! addresses the important topic of copyright and fair use. This is something I want to “kick up a notch” in our classrooms, both student and teacher use of digital materials at the outset of the year.

Thanks for checking out my presentations. I’m glad you found them useful. Best of luck to you in your teaching and moviemaking.
